In tough times, is the Fracking Industry retreating or advancing on transparency?

Sustainable Investing Coalition to Evaluate 28 Companies — Including Exxon, BP, Chevron, BHP Billiton — on Risk Management; Updated 2016 Scorecard to Include Methane Leakage Scores.

WASHINGTON, D.C.  (NEWS ADVISORY) – Faced with the same kind of downturn as the coal industry, are oil and gas companies engaged in fracking operations following the lead of coal by retreating on key environmental protections? Or, are hydraulic fracturing operators moving ahead with steps to increase disclosure of environmental and other risks?

As You Sow, Boston Common Asset Management, and Investor Environmental Health Network (IEHN) will host a phone-based news conference at 1 p.m. EST on December 14, 2016 to issue the groups’ fourth annual fracking scorecard. The report scores 28 major oil and gas companies operating across the United States on their disclosure (or lack thereof) to investors about management of key risks associated with hydraulic fracturing operations, including a continuing focus this year on key areas such as, methane leakage, water usage and induced seismicity.

The 2016 scorecard assesses five areas of environmental, social, and governance metrics, emphasizing, on a play-by-play basis, quantitative disclosures in: (1) toxic chemicals; (2) water and waste management; (3) air emissions; (4) community impacts; and (5) management accountability.
